Misshift Aftermath. Inside the Damaged Toyota GR Yaris Engine. OUCH!
Αυτοκίνητα και οχήματα
Good Morning, Carmrades!
After the misshift of @Robert Mitchell causing the death of the GR Yaris engine, we decided to open it up to inspect the damage. It's bad, but it could have been worse.

I like how people are calm about this. If this was a Ford or VW, the hate in the comments would be off the charts.
This, I think, is going to be the first of many engine failures on not only the Yaris GR engine, but many other modern small capacity, highly strung modern engines. You can't have everything, and getting big performance from such a tiny engine is a compromise, something has got to give, and that something is reliability. I'll stick with a straight 6 thanks, which seems to be the most reliable engine type, and can withstand constant thrashing.

@Relentless Pursuit Lets meet up little boy, then you can say all this to my face. I doubt you are man enough. Just a little boy pretending to be a man, come on little boy prove me wrong. Still waiting for proof on all of your bullshit claims, I know you have no cars at all, you are just a liar. But, I don't care about that, I do care about personal insults though. Are you in the UK ?

That is a fuck ugly exhaust on that gt86!!! Did stevie wonder pick it out?!🤷♂️😂
Dozens or GR's developing the same problem on cylinder one.hopefully toyota will re enforce valve components.
would a rev limiter of helped
I just saw HKS engine parts for the GR Yaris in a vlog... seams like a match made in content heaven . Man jewelry that is...do it for the gram!! Fellas!!

Hey guys, while the GR is at the shop have the dealership turn the ESE to off in the customisation/programming menu...it's under 'other'. I'm not gonna tell you what it does.
This happens because the manufacturers make three-cylinder engines (less balanced) with many horses, to raise a well-made engine with good quality materials from high turns this does not happen, look at the old 4-cylinder Honda you put water, sand , no oil, you turn it up to cut all the time i don't break , look at the nissan rb, look at toyota 2j , look at bmw m54 n 52 etc,...please car manufacturere in sport cars go to 4 cylinders or up and good materials on the engine , good quality aluminium good quality iron , good quality steel, good quality bearings springs etc oversize de motors well in the 21 century . thehigh revs shouldnt be a problem . who can think of making a three-cylinder engine for a car that is going to go on fire?? This car no is for one race and reaseambly or changing the engine how the 3 cyl rally car, this has to be a diary car realiable and durable.
20 years ago you will never hear a Japanese engine let alone a Toyota blowing up. Nowadays they just make them not to last at all. This should have been a bullet proof engine. Time will tell how many more Yaris GR will fail.
I will just rebuild it with forged pistons and special valves and machine everything smooth.
This is already second video on my yt timeline about blown gr yaris engine and exactly same cause and result. This can be some sort design issue for that model.
It's looks like a common issue for Toyota, I saw a video for same valve nut problem on a GR Yaris
This could be just unfortunate metal stresses on the rocker I would do an ultrasound test during the down time on the other parts/componants to see if this Bodes to a factory casting issue. Worst case this could lead to a factory recall on the valve train. If that study showed premature stresses. I would start R&D on those parts invest in stronger alloys and be ahead of the curve if customers are seeking to make the engine bullet proof with the aftermarket sector. Would be a shame. Such a great start for this car but it also teaches other owners to be careful not to thrash the car so soon or down the road. Sad that you guys are the sacrificial Lambs but because you have the talent and resources to do it. That will show the other owners who can't afford such mis-haps or pending legal cases with the dealership/s to remain mindful.
Screw the Yaris, what’s up with that E30 M3?
And another one, same valve. grbuild.info/goon/b-nteo/0aOqYXSTj5pst5g
That E30 looks lovely
didn't you just get the yaris? blew the engine already???
Not a unique problem !!!! See www.roadandtrack.com/car-shows/a35843417/toyota-gr-yaris-fifth-to-second-aftermath/
Being a mechanic going to be so boring when we're all on EVs. Be like 'motor broken, put new one in, no repairs' . Was thinking of a future GR Yaris as a track car but money shifting is concerning!
lol " hello toyota we miss shifted from 5 to 2 , can you give us a new engine ?" lololol
Misha, I am a subscriber now. Great channel!
I wonder if I could swap a Yaris GR engine into my Exige?!
paddle shift > stick
Interesting video. I have a question: Having recently bought a new Ford Focus 3 cylinder, I am interested to know if you or George think a 3 cylinder block is structurally weaker than a 4 cylinder? Especially when you consider the power some of these cars produce.
The valve rockers look as though they may be the same as in the Toyota 86 FA20 Eng ,I’m only looking at the Rockers on the bench in the other video .
Same problem as the Toyota 86 Fa20 engine on your hoist you should have a look at what I have discovered on the rockers. The rocker has dislocated from the rocker pivot or in this case the hydraulic lash adjuster and lodged itself on the side of the valve spring retainer and has caused the valve collets to drop out, that’s the damage that you see on the cam lobe. Yes the missed gear has in my opinion caused the problem but this car is built for track work and you have to expect this to happen. Toyota needs to reassess this repair.Check out my findings .Denstoj Auto Centre.
Already broken! thought that toyota had made a good engine.
I KNEW IT THAT TOYOTA RELIABILITY HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST HOAX IN HUMAN HISTORY!
Its kinda weird, you can miss out on so much opportunities by considering “sponsorship” nonsense. If you like a company and they offer to sponsor you or you secure a sponsorship. It will only help the growth and ability of your channel
Take the head off and take it to a performance development garage while you wait. They can scan the cams etc
he's not a mechanical engineer, why he would need a repair manual at such basic 3cyl direct injection turbocharged engine?! Bolts torque is well known by size and steel quality by any experienced mechanic, then rest of it speak itself.. for a real PROFESSIONAL guy.
why would you change the suspension on a car prepd by GR toyota? proper spazz
I have miss shifted for couple of times in my evo x, and its still not broken, ıdk why hahahahah

Guten Morgen!
Would Toyota warranty cover this?
Id love to know how the collet would make the through the pickup screen to get to the oil pump... biggest problems are binding in a valve spring or getting in the timing gear. Now if its something smaller to make it to the pump, it will go through the pump and get captured in the filter. Depending on the type of pump they use on this engine
Good now you can swap in a real engine light an Audi 5 cylinder. Or just trash the car, better idea.
Ich befürchte lt. deutschem Gesetz solltest du "Werbevideo" irgendwo permanent einblenden, ähnlich wie es JP und co haben. Nicht dass du uns in die bredouille kommst :D Weiter so !
Really educational video!! What kind of lamp are you using above the engine, it looks really practical?
WHY THE YARIS? WHYYYY???!!! :((((((((
I've done a 2nd to 5th mis-shift dozens of time, and always able to catch it in time to keep the engine safe. I'd expect a pro driver to do the same. Saying that he mis-shift off the track might just be a scam to get warranty... Anyways, I'm now glad we don't have GR Yaris here in Canada and now leery about future GR products.
DOHC with rocker arm? That is strange.
When the Yaris first came out I thought to myself that I would have preferred it with a dct. Would have saved this car!
Surely if the over rev was only 7500 as Robert said... then it's going to be a manufacture fault...?
Sad fact. This engine does not support bigger pistons for repairing. If the block is damaged new one should be bought. I think new head with full inspection of the old valves maybe a variant but to be sure whole new head with everything in it would be the way to go. The price will be so much but it's worth it. If I ever come to the ring I will drive only automatic rental cars. It's not worth the risk. Imagine someone like Robert with so much experience in the track and so many KM driven true the years can make a mistake so why wouldn't I? I wish someday I can work at Apex :O
"I mean... lets just say you should stay away from touching cars, maybe just stick to driving them" lol you are a legend! Thankyou for saying that. I feel that way all the time
Wow, I'm an ex works rally championship mechanic, that young lad knows his stuff, you are in good hands. Id get Wossner pistons, Piper, Kent, schrick or catcams billet cam, the manuals online from pay sites and rebuild it fellas, c'mon!!! You've got a great mechanic there, use him. Call Gazzoo racing, aren't they the TRD arm in europe? they should have parts and bits 'n bobs in stock to help, or try Fensport UK or the German TRD Dealer. Best of luck!!
I'm sorry an extreme over rev might explain the collet escaping but there is no excuse for the pivot pin escaping from the rocker unless it experienced enough force to seriously deform it!!!!
It will be interesting to see how these cars perform after a few months of actual use. Motive video experienced overheating issues on the dyno.
Maybe replace the long block to get the car running and rebuild the broken engine with more racing technology . I'm sure there are plenty of racing shops dying to get their hands on that engine. Goodluck anyways 👍
Robert touched on the 2 types of over revving, but maybe a deeper dive into the types of damage caused by each would be an episode. George was putting Misha to sleep with his soft voice. At the same time Misha sounds distracted while thinking "I didn't get my chance to drive it!" and "Can George add more HP?" We'll leave George's thoughts for another episode! LOL
This brings a tear to my eye, poor little yaris
Doesnt this go under the warranty of the toyota? Why not send it to the dealership and let them do the work?
Misha I honestly think you would be kidding yourself if that could be a manufacturing failure. As I put on Robert’s video a friend did something not too dissimilar with his EP3 civic type R a couple of years ago. His was a 6th to 2nd over rev whilst on track (missed 4th and got 2nd) which he also thought he had saved by dipping the clutch again as the car seemed fine. However a few weeks later it became clear that the damage had been done and was waiting to fail as coming home from a car event (I also have an EP3) having a little play on a dual carriageway here in the U.K. it let go in fairly major style. We think a piston ring ( or ring land) failed, jamming the piston which snapped the rod. The rod made itself a little inspection hole (by little I mean you could almost get your fist in it at the back had it not been for the oil filter) and that was the end of that engine. It’s a real shame especially as it could delay the car being ready for people though and I’m sure deep down Robert is kicking himself for it. But hats off to both of you for being so honest snd open about it.
its funny old cars had mechanical fuel pump the they all got electric pump and now they are going back to mechanical
Best model from Toyota is....... Honda

They are good if you always drive slowly and with great care
Now me and the mad scientist gotta rip apart the block, and replace the piston rings you fried!
There is a page in the GR manual, which states, your warranty is void from any track use or overly spirited driving...
thanks George, great video, like you light bar you use to work on the car, gave me an idea to look for one, what is the one you use?
Full race car build now, big power... Might as well
If you can't find timing marks on a strange engine to you, you make your own by putting the engine on tdc firing no.1 and the video is not actually inside the engine just under the rocker cover.....as an aside afriend of mine did a 5th to 2nd shift on a 4age corolla and 12000rpm WILL grenade the engine it had 3000km on the clock at the time
That's what happens when you push that much power thru 3 cylinders 🤣. The natural balance of the engine is just not existent. Bad decisions made at Toyota and in the auto industry in general!
New engine
Well, now is the time we see if the GR Yaris will be a true iconic car or not. It's not just about driving of the dealer! Good cars can also be repaired when they break!!!
This garage looks amazing, exactly as I would have it . All I will add is a nice coffee corner for flat whites and blondes 👱♀️☕️🤭
Looks like you guys need the superior track weapon now... the Honda S2000 not to be confused with the Honda lawnmower
Maybe also hitting the rev limiter contributed to this damage. As I saw Robert lap at Nurburgring, he was hitting the rev limiter too much IMO
Glad that it doesn't look too bad, because if Uncle Rodney decided to come knocking, I can only imagine the mess.
Mmmmm.... maybe the fact you managed to get a car so quick, (walk in one day delivery the next... not like the rest of us) that your not blaming Toyota for a failure and taking it as driver error.... or maybe there’s a video clip of the misshift to prove me wrong?
Obviously, lets put performance parts while were in there!!! Because why not
Just keep the Americans out of the manuals 😬
Pretty Narrow camlobes! Must have something to do with low friction & efficiency. Well, its Called Moneyshift for a reason.
Toyota 2ZZ-ge engine’s would do this all the time from miss shifts and exploded clutches. The good old days.
Seen rocker arms break but not seem the shaft fall out and cause issues seems odd the failure to happen later good look fishing the needle bearing great video
No guarantee Misha?
Look at it from the bright side! Now you can do a portjob and put in some bigger valves! :D
All the Best from Scotland..
Sorry for the mishap. I work for Toyota South Africa. Great video. Hope it gets fixed soon. Do you think you may have debris in the cylinders? Or did the pistons knock the valves? The data you need is probably available in Japan. But then again it will be in Japanese
Any guess how much a new engine would cost?
Definitely a failure from over rev. For those that are questioning it I’ll explain how and why it likely happened in the order it did. First when you have a mechanical over rev the vehicle’s on board safety mechanisms have no way to catch the engine and prevent it. The drive wheels are turning X mph and they are directly linked to the engine on a manual transmission so long as the clutch is engaged. So if a 5th to 2nd shift happens the engine is going to essentially spin until it can’t anymore. When this happens valve float occurs like mentioned in the video. The simple explanation of valve float is the camshaft spins so fast that the valve hasn’t made it back up to its rest position before the cam lobe try’s to push it back down again, it essentially ramps the cam lobe. When this occurs during normal operation at sustained rpm it can be caused by weak/work valve springs. Valve springs actually loose spring tension over time. Many high performance engine builders ask that the seat pressures be measured regularly during maintenance to try to prevent the possibility of valve float. So if over rev and valve float is the cause, why did it not blow up right after the missed shift? In my opinion it likely lost one of the valve keepers when the mis shift occurred or moved the keepers to where one was half way in. A valve spring will stay with one keeper or the keepers not installed perfectly. After this happened the car was basically a time bomb waiting to go off. Once the spring moved just enough the keepers moved the rest of the way and allowed the spring and rocker arm to come out. An articulating bore scope would yield you guys more information as far as if the piston is damaged and how bad the head surface is beat up prior to tear down. You may also be able to access Toyota’s tis and techstream global. I’m not 100% sure what the access allowed is in Germany compared to other countries but that would be your best chance of getting service information for the future.
Maybe the initial problem was the over-revving causing a slightly bent valve? That then began to seize and that caused the failure of the valve train for that valve due to the excessive load on the rocker? The scuffing on the cam might be a symptom too? It's just a thought, but it would explain the time delay from the over-rev to the failure. You will of course find out when the head comes off and you see how tight the valve is in it's guide!
Misha in 2 weeks: Let's LS or K swap a GR Yaris... 😂😂
God I hope someone keeps an eye on Robert in the M3.
throw that car to the garbage...pice of crap...you'll be changing the engine like hot cakes ...
Toyota engines were not build to be turbocharged and maintain its reliability! It’s weird for a brand new Toyota engine to fail .....they should reimburse you guys and give you another engine!

Daymn that's sad😬 With the cams the DBilas can probably help. An old school company that does a lot of things themselves. They make cams themselves from the ground up or modify existing ones😃🤩 If the pistons are toast i would go to Subi Performance and get the block sleeved and built stronger, mods to the heads and rev higher and maybe even make more power if wanted. Not cheap but would be hella sick😎👌

Hello good day Are you into crypto currency?
Just piecing together a couple of bits of information from the video, maybe stating the obvious or maybe helpful (I hope); if the event was that the over rev distorted the rocker arm and then it gradually let the pin fall out, ultimately letting letting valve drop after some time and additional laps, you guys may want to consider that the same distortion could have occurred to more rocker arms and that future valve drops could be an issue. Be it myself I would definitely replace all valve springs and rocker arms (given Toyota has so kindly declined all warranty). Hope that's helpful! Keep the great content coming!

After Robert over-revved the car he should have had it checked out. Was driving it hard for 5 laps afterwards careless?
Valve springs are normally the first to go with over revving a Performance car especially on a track, easy and CHEAP fix.
Toyotas are overated rubbish
2JZ swap!!😜
Doesn't the Yaris GR have a rev limiter??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? It needs one for American drivers......
Difference in gearing between 2nd and 5th is 2.07. Revlimiter is at 7150 rpm according to dyno charts. Obviously the dowshift was not done at redline in 5th but even if we knock of 1500 rpm when shifting into second we would still reach 11700 rpm (if my math is right) Ouch! Very interesting to see what the actual data shows. Huge respect to Robert for being so honest about the incident 👍
So the car broke down a few laps after the misshift. I can imagine the scenario where one customer does the misshift and the other one gets towed from the track. Who is charged then? Do you guys have some rev logs?
So LS swap?
LS swap it 😂
